This is really interesting. I just learned something I will incorporate into work I’m doing at Hillsdale College, to wit, the difference between envisioning the desired end state and developing the step by step goals to get there.
There’s a classic book on competitive pistol shooting that observes that misses provide feedback and opportunity for improvement. Israel Kirzner’s theory of entrepreneurship shows that it is is only when we recognize previous failures that we can systematically improve. Great post that helped me notice my own errors.
Great article Luke! I like how you summarized the failure as a lesson learn instead of focusing on it in a negative manor. Wood fired pizza will be a great addition to Hillsdale. Can't wait to see what you do next!
Maybe you should actually restore the cornice on the building. One of the worst features of hillsdales downtown is the loss of original cornices that cap the design.
I spend a lot of time helping my kids learn to keep their noses down, focusing on rock-solid foundations, and when it is time to grab the brass ring, there it is in easy reach and they can hold on and elevate from there. This, as opposed to leaping to grasp that ring without underpinnings or, scripturally, while standing on sand, and having to let go of the glory for lack of ability to hold on.
My apartment build-out is hindered just now due to need for engineering work, as we discussed. While I'm not excited to spend a few dollars for this effort, I really do understand the reticence of regulators to proceed without a survey and approved plan. First I felt indignant, and I never want any regulator to think my pocket is theirs to take from - we have a Constitution, after all. However, the chance to make sure the foundation is tight and build plan is sound is a net gain, especially here in Hillsdale where the inadvertent "sub-basement swimming pool" just down the street is painful recent memory.
In five years, nobody will know we had to suffer one more summer without wood fired pizza, but we will know if you swung through the ball.
"Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing." James 1:2-4
